15/03/25 ‘Cistercian Pottery’ workshops 10am+
VENUE: Craswall Village Hall
COURSE TUTOR: Ruth Watkins
In her farm pottery in Craswall, Ruth makes wheel-thrown and built vessels in stoneware and earthenware – most functional, some whimsical. Friends & family often join in.
In 2020, she discovered & harvested a seam of pure ochre clay in Craswall itself; has since been experimenting. It yields colours & textures very like Cistercian pottery excavated locally so, using these medieval shards as our inspiration, we will learn about preparing local clay, then building earthenware bowls & beakers before decorating them and ready-thrown ware with methods mirroring the local Cistercian traditions.
All will be glazed and fired at Dukes Farm, ready to collect (or post for a fee) within a few weeks. Suitable for anyone over 13-years-old. Please wear old clothes, and bring pencil & paper, a medium-sized bowl & old towel. Hot drinks supplied.
